Gilroy, CA — Driver impairment is suspected in a tragic multi-vehicle collision on the evening of Wednesday, January 1, 2025, that claimed the life of a 29-year-old pregnant woman from Gilroy, according to KSBW.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) Hollister-Gilroy Division reported that the accident took place around 6:37 PM on Leavesley Road east of New Avenue.
CHP investigators stated that 50-year-old Mountain View resident Jesus Carlos Temores was driving a 2008 GMC truck eastbound at high speed when his vehicle veered into the westbound lane. The truck collided head-on with a 2021 Chevrolet SUV, where the pregnant woman was a front-seat passenger. Temores’ vehicle continued its path of destruction, striking a 2020 Honda sedan traveling behind the SUV.
The pregnant woman was pronounced dead at the scene. While her identity has not been fully disclosed, authorities confirmed she was a Gilroy resident.
Temores was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. CHP officers suggested that alcohol likely played a role in the fatal crash.
The drivers of the Chevrolet SUV and Honda sedan were not immediately reported to have sustained life-threatening injuries. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
California DUI Law
Section 23153(a) of the California Vehicle Code (CVC) states that it is illegal for any driver to “Operate a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs and, as a result, cause bodily injury to someone else.”
Wrongful Death Claims
Even if a fatal accident doesn’t lead to criminal charges, families who lose a loved one can still file a Wrongful Death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This compensation can help cover medical bills, funeral costs, and lost income that the family depended on.
However, insurance companies will always try to pay as little as possible, making it difficult for families to receive the full amount they deserve. So, having an experienced personal injury attorney is essential to receive fair compensation and justice for your loved one.
