Salida, CA – A 12-year-old boy sustained major injuries riding his bicycle Thursday evening, January 2, 2024, after a collision at the intersection of Salida Boulevard and Broadway Avenue, according to The Modesto Bee.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the accident occurred around 6:25 PM when the boy attempted to cross Salida Boulevard using the north crosswalk. Preliminary investigations suggest that the boy entered the intersection against a red light.
At the same time, 28-year-old Maria Torres of Salida was driving a 2019 Acura northbound on Salida Boulevard. Torres entered the intersection on a green light when the collision occurred. The impact threw the boy onto the vehicle’s hood before he landed on the roadway.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene and found the juvenile lying near the damaged Acura. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, which may have helped mitigate the severity of his injuries. The boy was transported to Doctors Medical Center for treatment of major injuries.
The CHP is continuing its investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the collision. Authorities have not indicated whether any charges will result from the incident.
Duty of Care Toward Bicyclists
Drivers have a Duty of Care towards bicyclists, who are particularly vulnerable in traffic accidents. This responsibility includes being vigilant for bicyclists with whom they share the road and, if a collision occurs, staying with the victim to ensure they get proper medical treatment and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.
For those injured in a bicycle accident, filing a Personal Injury claim with the assistance of an experienced attorney can provide compensation for medical bills and other related damages.
Should the at-fault driver avoid legal consequences, compensation might still be available through a family member’s uninsured driver coverage. Consulting with a personal injury attorney can help determine the best options in such cases.
