Fatal Single-Vehicle Crash on Hwy 99 near Bear Mountain Blvd in Bakersfield

Bakersfield, CA — On the night of Saturday, January 4, 2024, a driver lost their life in a fiery crash on Highway 99, according to KBAK.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports that the accident took place around 11:10 PM on January 4, 2025, along the southbound lanes of Highway 99, just south of Bear Mountain Boulevard.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the driver of a 2023 Honda Civic was traveling southbound at an unknown speed. For reasons still under investigation, the vehicle veered off the roadway and onto the right shoulder, where it collided with a tree. The impact caused the car to ignite in flames.

Emergency responders arrived to find the vehicle engulfed in fire, and the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

CHP has not yet determined whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the accident. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities urge anyone with information about the crash to contact the California Highway Patrol.

Single-Vehicle Collisions and Comparative Negligence

In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility.

California’s Comparative Negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages. A personal injury attorney can play a critical role in sorting through these details to help victims and their families get the compensation they deserve.
