Robert Castro, 53, Friend Killed in Crash with DUI Suspect Joal Campbell, 36, at Belmont, Palm Ave in Fresno

Fresno, CA – Two men lost their lives on Monday night, January 6, 2025, when a suspected DUI driver ran a red light and crashed into their truck at the intersection of Belmont and Palm Avenues, according to KSEE.

The victims, 53-year-old Robert Castro and his friend, were killed instantly in the crash, which occurred around 7:18 PM.

Security footage from the scene shows the suspect, 36-year-old Joal Campbell, driving without headlights before running the red light and colliding with the victims’ truck. Police say Campbell was celebrating his birthday earlier that evening and ignored family members who urged him not to drive.

Campbell, who has a history of 11 arrests in Fresno County for DUI and property crimes, survived the crash and will face charges upon release from the hospital.

This crash is under investigation.

California DUI Law

Section 23153(a) of the California Vehicle Code (CVC) states that it is illegal for any driver to “Operate a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs and, as a result, cause bodily injury to someone else.”

Wrongful Death Claims

Even if a fatal accident doesn’t lead to criminal charges, families who lose a loved one can still file a Wrongful Death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This compensation can help cover medical bills, funeral costs, and lost income that the family depended on.

However, insurance companies will always try to pay as little as possible, making it difficult for families to receive the full amount they deserve. So, having an experienced personal injury attorney is essential to receive fair compensation and justice for your loved one.
