Roseville, CA — A collision on Interstate 80 early Saturday morning, January 12, 2025, claimed the life of a 9-year-old girl and led to the arrest of 36-year-old Ashley Baxter of Sacramento, according to CBS13.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the accident occurred around 5:20 AM on eastbound I-80, just east of Riverside Avenue.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Baxter was driving a white Hyundai Elantra and lost control of the vehicle. Her car spun out across the lanes and became disabled in the fast lane. Baxter exited the vehicle and moved to the shoulder, leaving the car stranded.
A red Honda CR-V, driven by a 50-year-old Fremont man, collided with the Hyundai after several other vehicles narrowly avoided the disabled car.
The Fremont man had two children in the Honda, including a 9-year-old girl, who was transported to Sutter Roseville Medical Center. Despite the life-saving efforts of hospital personnel, she tragically died from her injuries.
Neither the Fremont man nor the other child in the Honda were reported to have suffered serious injuries.
Baxter was arrested at the scene on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
The crash resulted in a temporary closure of I-80 for approximately 40 minutes. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision. The identity of the 9-year-old girl has not yet been released.
California DUI Law
Section 23153(a) of the California Vehicle Code (CVC) states that it is illegal for any driver to “Operate a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs and, as a result, cause bodily injury to someone else.”
Wrongful Death Claims
Losing a loved one in a traffic accident is devastating, and the pain can be made worse by the financial strain that often follows. Medical bills, funeral costs, and the loss of income to support dependents of the deceased can leave families struggling.
Filing a Wrongful Death claim against those responsible can provide compensation to help with these expenses. However, insurance companies will always try to pay as little as possible, making it difficult for families to receive the full amount they deserve.
This is why having an experienced personal injury attorney is essential so that they can fight to make sure you receive fair compensation and justice for your loved one.
