Crash into Canal near Frank Cox Rd Kills Atwater Man, 39, in Stanislaus County near Grayson

Stanislaus County, CA — A 39-year-old Atwater man lost his life in a single-vehicle collision near the town of Grayson on Tuesday afternoon, January 21, 2025, according to ABC10.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reported that the accident took place around 4:40 PM in the area of Frank Cox Road and Cox Road.

Responding officers discovered a heavily damaged Lexus sedan and the driver, who had been ejected from the vehicle, in a dry concrete irrigation canal. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

CHP investigators reported that the Lexus was traveling eastbound on Frank Cox Road when it veered onto the south dirt shoulder for reasons still under investigation. The driver attempted to correct the vehicle’s path by turning left, causing the car to rotate and leave the roadway. The car’s right-side tires struck the canal bank, leading to multiple rollovers.

The driver was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, which remains under investigation. Authorities have not yet determined whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the incident.

Single-Vehicle Collisions and Comparative Negligence

In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility.

California’s Comparative Negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages. A personal injury attorney can play a critical role in sorting through these details to help victims and their families get the compensation they deserve.
