Fresno, CA – On the morning of Monday, January 27, 2025, a pedestrian, identified by the Fresno County Coroner’s Office as 51-year-old Muhammad Akbar of Fresno, was struck and killed by a motorist near Fashion Fair Mall, according to The Fresno Bee.
The Fresno Police Department reports that the accident took place shortly before 6 AM at the intersection of East Shaw Avenue and First Street.
Officers arrived to find Akbar critically injured in the crosswalk. He was transported to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to her injuries. The driver involved remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities.
Investigators do not believe that DUI was a factor in the collision. However, the exact cause remains unclear as surveillance cameras in the area were not operational at the time of the incident.
Investigators are working to determine the circumstances, including the direction Akbar was crossing. The intersection was temporarily closed as authorities conducted their investigation.
Pedestrian Fatalities and Wrongful Death Claims
Drivers have a Duty of Care towards pedestrians, who are particularly vulnerable in traffic accidents. This responsibility includes being vigilant for pedestrians near the roadway and, if a fatal collision occurs, staying with the victim, alerting emergency responders, and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.
For those who lose a loved one in a pedestrian accident, filing a Wrongful Death claim with the assistance of an experienced attorney can provide compensation for medical bills, funeral costs, and other related damages.
Should the at-fault driver avoid legal consequences, compensation might still be available through a family member’s uninsured driver coverage. Consulting with a personal injury attorney can help determine the best options in such cases.
