Delano, CA – A driver who was injured in a head-on collision that left one person dead on Saturday night, February 1, 2025, has been identified as Correctional Officer A. Ortiz, according to KBAK.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports that the accident took place around 10:55 PM on Highway 43 near Cecil Avenue, north of Delano.

Investigators determined that the Nissan, driven by an unidentified person, veered into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with the Tesla. The Nissan caught fire, and its driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have not yet released the victim’s name.
The Tesla driver, identified as Ortiz, suffered serious injuries and was taken to Kern Medical for treatment. A GoFundMe campaign was launched to support Ortiz and his family, with organizers asking for donations as he recovers.
Authorities closed northbound lanes of Highway 43 during the investigation. The cause of the crash remains under review, and it is unclear if alcohol or drugs were involved.
Personal Injury Claims
When the actions of reckless drivers cause others to be injured, the cost of recovery should not fall on their victims. Filing a Personal Injury claim with the at-fault party’s insurance can provide compensation for medical bills and lost wages during recovery.
However, insurance companies often try to deny or minimize claims. That’s why having a knowledgeable personal injury attorney on your side is crucial to securing proper compensation for your injuries.
