Fatal, Fiery Crash at SR-99, South Ave in Tehama County

Tehama County, CA – On the early morning of Saturday, April 12, 2025, a single-vehicle crash followed by a fire resulted in at least one fatal injury, according to CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports that the accident took place around 1:17 AM near State Route 99 and South Avenue, where a vehicle left the roadway and caught fire after crashing into a wooded area on the west side.

Emergency responders were alerted by a caller who reported seeing a vehicle engulfed in flames. Fire crews from Tehama County arrived and confirmed that the fire had spread to surrounding trees and vegetation, igniting an area approximately 50 feet by 50 feet. The fire was contained shortly after, but the vehicle remained fully involved when firefighters reached it.

Authorities initially were unsure whether the vehicle was occupied due to the severity of the fire. However, further investigation at the scene revealed one deceased individual inside the burned vehicle, which was later identified as a late 1990s Jeep Grand Cherokee. The victim’s identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin.

Authorities noted that the cause of the crash remains under investigation, and it is still unclear whether any medical episodes, distractions, or environmental factors may have contributed.

Single-Vehicle Collisions

In some cases, investigations may reveal that even in a single-vehicle accident, nearby drivers or unsafe road features share some responsibility. California’s Comparative Negligence rule means that, even if those injured in accidents are found partially at fault, they may still be eligible to receive partial compensation for damages.
