Multi-Vehicle Crash Kills 1 on Hwy 101, Paul Ave in San Francisco

San Francisco, CA – In the early morning of Sunday, April 20, 2025, a crash involving multiple vehicles resulted in a fatality on southbound U.S. Highway 101 at the Paul Avenue off-ramp, according to CHP Fatal.

The California Highway Patrol reports that the incident began around 3:07 AM when a gray BMW sedan struck the center divide and came to rest blocking the number one lane.

A second vehicle, a dark-colored Honda Civic, subsequently collided with the initial vehicle. Witnesses, including one from a nearby apartment, reported heavy black smoke and flames, prompting a response from the San Francisco Fire Department. At least one person was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Paul Avenue off-ramp remained closed for several hours while authorities investigated and cleared the scene.

The identity of the deceased and the cause of the collision have not been released as the investigation continues.

Wrongful Death Claims & Comparative Negligence

Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s Comparative Negligence rule, several parties can share partial responsibility.  Should someone else be found even partly responsible for the death, the family may be able to file a Wrongful Death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide compensation to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income to support the family of the deceased.
