Antioch, CA – On the evening of Tuesday, April 22, 2025, a wrong-way driver caused a three-vehicle collision that resulted in at least one fatality, according to CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports that the accident took place around 9:23 PM at the transition ramp from eastbound State Route 4 to southbound State Route 160.
Authorities say a black Lexus sedan, a silver Mercedes SUV, and a Dodge Caliber were involved in the crash. One of the vehicles overturned and landed upside down in the center divider, blocking all lanes of traffic.
Officials confirmed that one individual was pronounced dead at 9:50 PM. The Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office and the coroner were called to the scene.
The closure of the affected transition ramp remained in effect through the night, with Caltrans extending the closure until 7:00 AM the following morning. All lanes were reopened shortly thereafter.
This is an ongoing investigation.
Wrongful Death Claims & Comparative Negligence
Determining fault in a collision can involve multiple factors, and under California’s Comparative Negligence rule, several parties can share partial responsibility. Should someone else be found even partly responsible for the death, the family may be able to file a Wrongful Death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide compensation to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income to support the family of the deceased.
