Fremont, CA – In the early hours of Friday, April 25, 2025, a traffic collision involving a pickup truck and a pedestrian resulted in a fatality, according to CHP Fatal.
The California Highway Patrol reports that the accident took place around 1:39 AM in the northbound lanes of I-880 just south of the Mowry Avenue exit.
Initial reports indicate that a blue Chevrolet Silverado struck a pedestrian under unclear circumstances. A second pickup truck may have also been involved, as two vehicles were later observed on the right shoulder of the freeway. Debris was scattered across multiple lanes, and both the center divide and traffic lanes were affected by the collision.
Emergency responders arrived shortly after the incident and confirmed that the pedestrian died at the scene. The identity of the victim has not been released, pending notification of next of kin.
All northbound lanes of I-880 were closed temporarily due to the severity of the crash, and a SigAlert was issued while investigators documented the scene and cleared debris. Traffic was diverted to Stevenson Boulevard, and the closure remained in effect for several hours before all lanes were reopened around 4:45 AM.
The California Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the circumstances of the collision, including whether speed, visibility, or other factors contributed to the fatal incident.
Duty of Care Toward Pedestrians
Drivers have a Duty of Care towards pedestrians, who are particularly vulnerable in traffic accidents. This responsibility includes being vigilant for pedestrians near the roadway and, if a collision occurs, staying with the victim to ensure they get proper medical treatment and cooperating with authorities investigating the crash.
Wrongful Death Claims
Even if a fatal accident doesn’t lead to criminal charges, families who lose a loved one can still file a Wrongful Death claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance. This can provide support to help cover medical bills, funeral expenses, and the loss of income.
